Rules and Tips for Success
Like many hobbies, metal detecting has an unspoken code of conduct and plenty of insider tips for success. If you’re new to detecting, don’t rely on stereotypes you’ve seen on TV or in the movies. Instead, you should gather all the information you can from seasoned hobbyists first for the most productive detecting trips! The most important tip is to choose high-traffic places to detect: beaches in the summer, parks, playgrounds, etc. Visit on a Sunday evening after a busy weekend for the most finds, and dig after every promising signal. Sometimes even a weak beep can yield a very valuable find!
As for metal detecting conduct, the most important rule is to respect others. Always cover your holes, even on the beach. People may step in them and get hurt – would you want to trip because of a hole that you didn’t expect? Also, if you dig up trash, take it with you to throw away. There’s no point in reburying it or leaving it to lie unpleasantly on the ground. Plus, something that looks like trash at first may actually be treasure upon closer examination later. Lastly, respect beach or park patrons and other detectors. Don’t detect too close to areas where people are playing or sunning themselves; you’ll make people think that detectors are nuisances in general and ruin the fun for others. Let other detectors have their space; don’t try to infringe on their area or hog the whole park or beach. Everyone will have more fun when there is a mutual feeling of respect.
