Hitting the Sacajawea Jackpot

As an avid coin collector, I was excited to hear that the James K. Polk dollar had been released back in August. I immediately got in the car and drove to the bank to trade in some ratty old bills for the shiny golden coins. As impressive as these pieces of currency might be – Polk is displayed in profile on the obverse and Lady Liberty stands proud on the reverse – I still prefer to get my coins the old fashioned way. That’s by scouring the neighborhood with a metal detector.
The Polk dollar’s release reminded me of my best metal detector session of all time, when I hit the Sacajawea jackpot. You might recall that the Sacajawea dollar was first minted in 2000, and it was redesigned just this year. Somehow I managed to find five of these coins within a 300-yard radius along my street. It was almost like someone had left them for me – a trail that could be followed to chest of buried treasure, perhaps. Even though each coin was hidden beneath layers of leaves and other organic debris, my metal detector managed to locate them without incident.
